Top Gay-Friendly Bars in Madrid Where to Feel Like Home
Madrid is a cutting edge city that greets all types of travelers and it is also gay-friendly. A reader of Travellector is going to visit Madrid soon and asked me to show him a few bars or pubs where gays can really feel like home, have fun and meet interesting people. So, after thinking on some bars where I went when I visited my friends and after asking some advice to a dear gay friend of mine, living in Spain for years, I made a list of gay-friendly bars where to go when in Madrid. Everyone can visit these places, some of them are really famous, others are less famous but among my favourites!
If you are visiting Madrid you can find helpful my travel itinerary and, if you are gay, you can put these gay bars in Madrid on your bucket list!
Chueca is the district where gays meet (but also in Malasaña you can find gay-friendly places). It is characterized by narrow streets dotted with bars and traditional shops. The neighborhood is very crowded during the day and at night, till the early hours. It is a very quaint place, the cleanliness of the streets is not excellent lately. My advice is not to get accomodation in this area if you want to rest at night, cause it is noisy.
Are you ready? Enjoy this list of the top gay-friendly bars in Madrid (they are not in order of importance):
– BEARS BAR. Pelayo, 4. Website.
This bar is a real institution. You can recognize it cause there is a outdoor sign with a bear leaning against a tree, symbol of Madrid. It is located right in the center of Chueca district. Here you can meet bears, daddies, cubs, chubs and chasers from around the world. You will never find the same people.
– GRIS. Calle San Marcos, 29. Website.
Gris is frequented mainly by under 30. What I like of Gris is the quality of music, there are always music-themed events. If you love industrial or alternative rock, this is your place. Then people are very polite. You can have sipping shots (called “chupitos“) at about €1 at weekends.
– FRAGGEL POP. Calle Belén, 6. Website.
Fraggel Pop is one of the most interesting places to visit. My friend agrees with me. There are well mixed people from bears to chubs (and handsome too). My advice is to get earlier on weekends. You can be lucky enough to have coupons handed out along Calle de Pelayo before you arrive.
– LA NUOVA TROJE. Calle de Pelayo, 27. Website.
I absolutely loved La Nueva Troje. It is a gay-friendly bar but also a meeting place for straight people. Lounge decorations are nice! People, staff included, are very friendly. Quality of food and drinks is good (taste croquetas and mini burgers) and prices are cheap. You can also choose among a great selection of shisha. Music is enjoyable and wifi is free. Not bad!
– LL BAR. Calle Pelayo, 11. Website.
I recommend this bar only if you are looking for something different. LL Bar gives you the possibility to enjoy drag queens performances. It is open daily from 20 to late (about 3.00/3.30) and the atmosphere is fun. Drag queens start thei performances around 23.30/midnight. On the weekends there are drink 2×1 offers.
– THE KAMA. Calle Gravina, 4. Website.
One of the best places to meet people is the Kama. There is a dance floor here but the best crowd is at bar! People are friendly.
– CAZADOR. Trvsa. de las Pozas, 7, Malasaña. Website.
This bar is crowded with gay hipsters, but you can go here to have a chat and a beer. When I visited it I had a café con leche. It is a small bar located in the Malasana district. When the weather is good people love to stay outdoor.
TIP: If you like house music my friend recommends OHM, in Plaza Callao or LONG PLAY (more for young people) in Chueca district.
These are the gay-friendly bars where you can spend a pleasant evening in joy, without any discrimination. Now that you have the list of the most gay-friendly bars you have to choose where to go! Do you suggest any other place?
